The on-site fitness center is a great amenity at The HighLine Senior Apartments. This week on the blog we wanted to share some tips to make the most of it, so you can enjoy fitness and enhance your well-being from home.
1. Create a supportive environment
Studies show that when we do exercise in group settings, the outcomes improve. People tend to show greater consistency as well as have a better workout overall. So we recommend gathering a group of friends and neighbors to partake in activities in the on-site fitness center. This can be a way of making new friends, creating stronger communities and staying more consistent in your exercising habits!
2. Key exercises
Once you have gathered your group, begin with gentle movements that are great for balance. Research shows that the risk of falls increases over the age of 65. Movement to increase one's balance can help greatly with preventing falls.
The Mayo Clinic suggests movements such as: “Balance on one foot while you're standing for a time. You can do this at home or anywhere. Try it when brushing your teeth. Use a stable object like a table or a counter for support if you need it. You also can try to stand up from a seated position without using your hands. Or walk in a line, heel to toe, for a short distance.”
There are also a great number of workouts on YouTube, to inspire you. For example, the National Institute on Aging has a great 15-minute sample workout for Older Adults.
3. Make the most of the equipment
The on-site fitness center at The HighLine has an array of equipment to be used. From stationary bikes and treadmills, these machines increase your cardiovascular fitness without excessive strain. There is also access to free weights and weight machines, which can help to grow muscle and improve your strength. If you are concerned about stability, the center also has chairs, where you can do exercise with free weights while sitting down.
4. Stay consistent
Creating a fun and enjoyable exercise routine can be one of the greatest ways to remain consistent, and with consistency comes progress. Having an on-site fitness center makes it even easier to keep up with your regular routine and helps you to fit movement for your body into your busy life.
5. Have fun
Last but certainly not least, making use of the on-site fitness center should be a fun experience for all. Exercise is great for your body as well as your mind, and the increase in endorphins can last all day. So make sure you are enjoying the movement you do. After all, that's the main goal!
