October brings some of the most beautiful fall colors to Fitchburg and the surrounding Madison Area. For residents of The HighLine, it makes it one of the best times of the year to enjoy nearby walks and trails.
This week on the blog, we are sharing some of our favorite walks to see them at their best.
UW Arboretum – 10 minutes from Fitchburg
The Arboretum is one of the best places to see fall colors in Madison! Fantastic displays of maples, oaks, and tamaracks turn the trails into a tunnel of oranges and reds. With more than 17 miles of trails to explore, there is a trail for all ages and abilities, from shorter loops for a gentle outing to more complex paths for those looking for more of a challenge. With a quiet atmosphere and easy parking, it is one of Madison’s top choices this fall.
Capital City State Trail – 10 minutes from Fitchburg
Capital City State Trail is another wonderful place to explore near Fitchburg during the Fall and only a 10-minute drive from the HighLine. The trail offers 17 miles of landscape to explore and paved pathways. Nine miles of the trail go through the scenic Capital Springs State Recreation Area (Dane County E-way) and is a popular location for walkers, even more so as the colors change in fall.
Picnic Point – 20 minutes from Fitchburg
Picnic Point offers great fall colors whilst also being a nearly mile-long peninsula along Lake Mendota’s south shore. The short but scenic trail offers views over the lake, and with well-maintained paths, it offers a relaxed walk with plenty of options to pause. Furthermore, there is plentiful wildlife to watch as time goes by.
Pheasant Branch Conservatory – 25 minutes from Fitchburg
The Pheasant Branch Conservatory offers over 160 acres of natural colors to explore in the Fall. With great views of the Capitol building, downtown Madison skyline, and Lake Mendota, it's a top choice for those in the area to explore. Many flock to the conservation area for bird watching and to see the change in colors in the fall months.
